What I like about Near is that he's easily the least likeable character, so he's a challenge to like, but it pays off, not because he "wins" (he barely does), but because you realize that he's not just L's shadow. It's easy to condemn Near as being an inferior copy of L, because he's quirky and came into the picture right after L died, even insulting L and then taking over as the main force against Kira (that wasn't criminal like Mello). After the loss of a beloved character like L it's easy to hate Near, but he's really an interesting character in that he isn't emotionally attached and has a different approach to the Kira case, and every once in a while you even get a glimmer of his own personal opinions on something. He feels the need to live by L's standards, but in many ways he's like Light, ruthless in his own manner, but not likely to get too emotional like Light or L. He isn't without ideals, but he doesn't wear them. He even has his own code of honor, as seen when he easily gives Mello back his picture or when he looks disgusted by the president's behavior. Also, he's moe.
