It wasn't bad. It's only similar to Eva in that it had giant robots + (occasionally, mostly just at the start) whiny protagonist + mindfucks + MYSTERIOUS CONSPIRACY BEHIND THE SCENES SHOWN BY THE PUPPET MASTERS TALKING ABOUT THINGS THAT ARE ALL CRYPTIC AND FORESHADOWING AND SHIT, but Eva didn't exactly invent any of those, it just was the first show most people remember that used them all together.
The whole idea of Tokyo Jupiter being cut off from the outside world and time moving slower in there was interesting. I also liked that he hooked up with the Misato (I suppose that archetype is another thing you could claim they semi-ripped from Eva.)
Movie was pretty fail, though, since they apparently thought it would be a good idea to take the series and compress it to 2 hours while at the same time having 80% of the movie be recycled footage from the series, making them have to fuck around with the plot to have it make sense. The love story was done a bit better, but everything outside of that failed hardcore vs. the series.
