The reason people like Kyon is that he's not a "textbook" anything. He's a normal person. Not the typical archetype of a "normal person character", but an actual, real, believable guy.
It's one of the reasons he doesn't have much rope, what the fuck could a normal person do in his situation. And even then when he's generally being dragged along, he still managed to come up with solutions for shit several times, like Sighs or Endless Eight.
