Ash and the gang watch the Saffron Gym go up in flames from a safe distance, vowing to avenge Sabrina. They hide out in an abandoned warehouse until the next day, when they hide in a shipment of prototype Pokeballs that come in for Silph Co. and successfully infiltrate the building. They fight their way through Team Rocket's grunts, eventually gaining their way to Giovanni's inner sanctum. However, their Pokemon are severely exhausted, and Giovanni's are stronger. That's when Jesse, James, and Meowth show up and join the fight against Giovanni. Giovanni reveals his Master Ball production machine, which will allow Team Rocket to control the world by catching any Pokemon they want, no matter how powerful it is. Pikachu overloads the machine and it explodes, causing the building to collapse.
Ash and the gang manage to escape fine, and assume that Team Rocket has finally, once and for all, been defeated. With confidence, Ash decides to challenge the Elite Four. However, Giovanni also escaped, dragged out of the wreckage by his Persian. He runs to a nearby government office, gets a fake identity, and decides to follow Ash for revenge.
Ash finally gets to the Indigo Platau, intending to confront the Elite Four for their part in Team Rocket's plans, looking the other way while the syndicate did what it wanted. The Four snub him, telling him he's immature, and that adults do what they need to in order to get by. They claim that Giovanni was a cat's paw of theirs. Enraged, Giovanni sends suicide bombers with Electrodes into their headquarters to kill Ash, Dawn, Brock, and the Elite Four. The League HQ blows up. Word reaches Pallet Town, where Ash's mom assumes Ash is dead, and has a breakdown.
