1. They're at a catholic school with a secret base underneath it where chosen children and secret organization members disguised as students and faculty wage a war against monsters that possess people and want to wipe out humanity.
-Nice setting. Except not.
2. There is a yggdrasil tree in the base and they need to kill angels and steal their cores to support it so that their world's wave function doesn't quantum voip.
-Well that took care of the motivation. No doubt this will continue for volumes until a small twist involving what exactly the yggdrasil tree and cores are is revealed near the end.
3. Some disembodied voice in the base gives him some glowing capsule that he absorbs, allowing him to summon a personification of his own power. So he basically has a soul gun.
-lol now you have power which can increase with your state of mind so if you rage hard enough you can win any battle.
4. There's less morbid gravity and more high school drama. Not to mention development has been greatly reduced due to Shinji starting out as less of a pussy, Rei starting out with a bit of emotion, Kowaru showing up from the very beginning, and Asuka being less overtly bitchy.
-I don't see any of them being able to grow very much from where they already are unless they go in a completely different direction from the original, yet somehow I only foresee archetypal progression from this point.
