Evangelion is just a cover for the real show, Penguin Genesis Penvangelion, a show entirely about Pen Pen, which only select people around the world have been given copies of. A groundbreaking action/drama/mystery/mecha/romance/comedy/shonen/poltical program, Penvangelion follows the exploits of Pen Pen Katsuragi as he works his way up in Nerv, all the while saving the world from strange geometic shapes and forced Christian symbolism. And while it doesn't seem like much when he has at his disposal the powerful PENVA Unit 01, it's important to note that he's drunk most of the time.
Here's a scene from The Midway Point of Penvangelion, a movie released by a joint venture between Gainax and Lucasfilms in 1998. Lucas Films dedicated all their talent to the creation of the movie, leaving only Lucas himself and a few other people behind in America to make some kind of podracing movie - who knows, I don't watch that sort of thing.
The series finally came to an end in 2002, with a whopping 120 episodes and three movies, some of which were just of Pen Pen sleeping in his fridge for two and a half hours, but were nevertheless remarkable for their technical merits.
