BG shaders - mental ray

wtf is wrong with bg shaders in maya mental ray. its driving me fucking mad. pic related shows how the shadows are caught by the bg shader on the geometry below the castle, but the look all fucked up? why? Using Directional lights, raytracing shadows are on and the bg shader has cast shadows turned off. If anyone has any experience with this pls help. ty
